Bound with French marble papers over boards with cloth spine, label tipped-on spine, price £100. English translation of Tschichold’s 1967 essay ‘Life and Work of Jacob Sabon’ and first translation of Hochuli’s 1969 review of the ‘New Typeface’, first published in STM. Sample pages with quotes by and about Tschichold and the Sabon typeface. Composed in Stempel foundry cast Sabon up to 48pt Didot in various page arrangements and printed in several colours. Two tipped-in type pieces plus one image of Sabon’s crest. Digital b&w photos of cast type, matrices and samples.

Michael Castro. The Guide: Maimonides’ Journey. The Garlow Studio. 2019. 35 pp. 146 x 111 mm (5.75 x 4.375 in). Poliphilus and Blado on custom handmade papers from Katie McGregor, with a multi-color woodblock print created, editioned and handcoloured by Marcia Brown, a two-colour initial on the opening page and ornamental flowers dividing the sections throughout. Printed on a Vandercook SP15. 50 copies, designed by Marcia Moore and executed by Danita Rafalovich and Marcia Brown, in heavy blue paper covers, red endleaves, exposed spine with leather tabs, a black leather-covered clamshell case with spine label, price $375. Castro’s narrative poem relates the biography and thought of Moses Maimonides (1135-1204), considered one of the most important Jewish theologians of all time. The print references the architecture and tile work of medieval Middle East synagogues in areas where Maimonides lived before his exile. Castro, poet laureate of St Louis and a leader of the literary community, died in 2008.

A new abecedarium in which each letter form and the ampersand are constructed entirely of sorts having 12 pts along at least one side. Designed from a large collection of metal ornaments, each image measures 6” square and is printed (recto only) in two split fountain ink passes.

The subtitle refers to singer-songwriters Joni Mitchell, Annie Lennox and Tracy Chapman, whose poetic lyrics, along with those of other musical artists as well as text from philosophers, writers and poets such as Simone de Beauvoir, Virginia Woolf, Susan Sontag and Julia Kristeva, provide commentary in the marginalia.

Printed on a Vandercook SP15. 100 copies. Pamphlet stitched and wrapped in the Hahnemühle, price $30. I admit that due to both the printer/designer (me), and the author/musician (Tarbox) being of limited means and minimal budget, the interior is printed digital offset, and only the jacket is printed by letterpress from type. That written, the Optima Nova Pro has an extended character set that the metal never had.
