The Earliest known publisher’s jacket found at Bodleian Library, Oxford

Nineteenth Century Dust Jackets blog reports that Michael Tanner discovered this 1830 book jacket in the Bodleian Library. The book, Friendship’s Offering for 1830, was published by Smith, Elder & co. in 1829. The book has been separated from the jacket. The text on the jacket includes a ‘four-line promotional verse […] intended to entice the feminine reader or her suitor to buy the book — it might be considered a sort of poetical dust jacket blurb of the Romantic era.’ Read more here.
