Ben Kiel is a typeface designer, graphic designer, and educator. He works at House Industries where he practices typeface design, development, and direction. He teaches at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the University of Delaware. Additionally, he is part of the faculty of the Type@Cooper certificate program. Before working at House Industries, he worked both as a graphic designer and as an apprentice letterpress printer in St. Louis, Missouri. Kiel received an MA in typeface design from the University of Reading, UK in 2005.
Louise Fili is principal of Louise Fili Ltd, specializing in food packaging and restaurant identities. She is co-author, with Steven Heller, of Italian Art Deco, Dutch Moderne, Streamline, Cover Story, British Modern, Deco Espana, German Modern, French Modern, Typology, Design Conoisseur, Counter Culture, Stylepedia, Euro Deco, and Scripts. She has also written and designed A Civilized Shopper’s Guide to Florence and Italianissimo. In 2004 she was inducted into the Art Directors Hall of Fame. A monograph of her work, Elegantissima, was just published.
Sara Soskolne is senior designer at the New York foundry Hoefler & Frere-Jones. Originally a graphic designer in her home town of Toronto, after ten years of apparently never being able to find quite the right typeface for the job she finally decided to just learn how to make them herself, jumping careers and an ocean to study typeface design at the University of Reading where she earned her MA with distinction in 2003. Since joining H&FJ in 2005 she has contributed to the design of a wide range of both bespoke and retail typefaces, including Verlag, Chronicle, Sentinel, Gotham and Tungsten, and has taught typeface design at the Yale School of Art, New York’s School of Visual Arts and The Cooper Union.
Russell Maret is a type designer and private press printer working in New York City. He is the current North American Chair of the Fine Press Book Association and a past trustee of the American Printing History Association. His limited edition books are collected and exhibited throughout the world and he is the author of many essays dealing with the intersection of letter design and technology. In 2009 he was awarded the Rome Prize in Design from the American Academy in Rome.
Andrew Steeves is an award-winning typographer and literary publisher. He is the co-founder of Gaspereau Press, Kentville, Nova Scotia.
Wilber H. “Chip” Schilling creates fine press books, artists’ books,
broadsides and prints—specializing in design, photography, letterpress printing and binding. Since 1992, he has worked under the imprint of Indulgence Press. Schilling earned a BA in history and photography from Clark University (Worchester, MA) and an MFA in book arts and printmaking from The University of the Arts (Philadelphia, PA). His work is collected and exhibited internationally. Schilling currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Fine Press Book Association and for the Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art. He is an adjunct faculty member at the College of Visual Arts, the MCBA and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. He lives and works in Minneapolis, Minnesota USA.
