Kim Merker Remembrance

Monday, September 16th, 2013

A crowd of young and old gathered at the Old Brick in Iowa City yesterday, September 15, to celebrate the life of Karl Kimber Merker. He was a superb maker of books, mentor to many, and founder of the University of Iowa’s Center for the Book. Merker died on April 28.

Speakers included (top to bottom) Tim Barrett (presently head of the Center), Bonnie O’Connell (Merker protege and book artist, now of Omaha), and Sid Berger (author of Printing and the Mind of Merker, issued by the Grolier Club). There was music as well, provided by Meghan Merker, her sister Ker Cleary, and “friends.”

Those attending received a beautiful keepsake, edited and produced by Bonnie O’Connell, which featured quotes from Harry Duncan, Michael Lally, Soetsu Yanagi, Sid Berger, Dana Gioia, plus a couple from Merker himself.

I took no pictures at the remembrance, but did at the reception held afterwards at The Mill. Photos are on the FPBA facebook page, here.
