Art of the Book: a free one-day symposium. Register by March 7.

Art of the Book, a free, one-day symposium sponsored by Historic Deerfield, Inc. and the Grace Slack McNeil Program for Studies in American Art at Wellesley College, to take place at Historic Deerfield, Deerfield, Massachusetts, Saturday, March 12, 2011 from 9-4:30

Registration Fee: FREE; pre-register by MARCH 7 to assure a seat.

Program: In an age of Kindles, iBooks and internet services such as Google Books, electronic media challenges the very notion of the printed book. As useful as they are, electronic resources can neither replace the sensory engagement that comes with opening a book and viewing, reading and turning its pages nor replicate the artistry and technical skill evident in a books design, materials, printing and binding. This free one-day symposium aims to explore and to celebrate the history, materials, methods and settings of books and bookmakers art. This program is made possible by the generous support of the Barra Foundation.

Speakers: Barbara Blumenthal, Book Arts Specialist, Mortimer Rare Book Room, Smith College and independent hand printer and bookbinder; Kim Sichel, Associate Professor, History of Art and Architecture, Boston University; Molly Eckel, Wellesley College ’12; Sam Ellenport, Principal, Harcourt Bindery; Todd Pattison, Collections Conservator, Harvard College Library; Jae Jennifer Rossman, Assistant Director for Special Collections, Arts Library, Yale University; Christopher Couch, Senior Lecturer, Program in Comparative Literature, University of Massachusetts; Christie Jackson, Ruby Winslow Linn Curator, Old Colony Historical Society; Thomas Lawrence Long, Assoc.
