New Albion Presses Being Made

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

This is interesting … Reproductions of the Albion press, an early iron handpress manufactured in London from the 1820s to the 1930s, are now being made by an English firm, Harry F. Rochat Ltd. Read about the making of these fully functional reproductions at the manufacturer’s website.

I have admired Andy English’s work for years and so was pleased to learn of his blog where he display his progress on current projects. Have a look at the stages of designing and then engraving the blocks for Oak Tree Fine Press’s A Outrance. (The finished engraving is shown above.) You may be interested in seeing his short video showing the development of a bookplate from the initial sketches, through the engraving of the woodblock and, finally different states of the printed plate, below.

Andy also blogs about restoring his Albion press. Keep up the fine work, Andy!
