California in Relief: A History in Wood and Linocut Prints

I’m passing on this announcement from the Hearst Art Gallery and Art Knowledge News’ background article about the Hearst’s current show.

Opening July 25 through September 20: California in Relief: A History in Wood and Linocut Prints

Guest curator Art Hazelwood has selected nearly 100 works spanning a century of Golden State art history. Especially in Northern California, printmaking has been in the forefront of several distinctive art movements that have influenced, and been influenced by, cultural and political events of our time.  The prints and books are divided into eight areas of focus: the Arts and Crafts movement; the Labor School; Wood engraving; Asian influence; Abstraction; the GI Bill and the establishment of the university print department; Latino art; and Fine press print publishers. Characterized by technical virtuosity and innovation, these stunning woodcuts, wood engravings, linocuts and artists’ books represent the full range, power and beauty of the medium.

Among the artists represented are Robert Arneson, Lucienne Bloch, Linda Lee Boyd, Richard V. Corrrell, Antonio Fransconi, Juan Fuentes, Leon Gilmour, Willima S. Rice, Gustave Baumann, George M. Hibi, Helen Hyde, Tom Killion, Bertha Lum, Emmanuel C. Montoya, Chiura Obata, Emmy Lou Packard, Mildred Rackley, Roy Ragle, Frank Rowe, Elizabeth Norton, San Quentin Artists in Corrections, Charles Surendorf, Wayne Thiebaud, William Wiley, and William Wolff.  A complete checklist, with color images, is available in the Gallery.

Note: The title of the show should not be confused with Richard Wagener’s recent book of engravings, California in Relief (Book Club of California, 2009), however this book is included in the show.

Wood engraver Andy English at work

I have admired Andy English’s work for years and so was pleased to learn of his blog where he display his progress on current projects. Have a look at the stages of designing and then engraving the blocks for Oak Tree Fine Press’s A Outrance. (The finished engraving is shown above.) You may be interested in seeing his short video showing the development of a bookplate from the initial sketches, through the engraving of the woodblock and, finally different states of the printed plate, below.
